Study on The Properties of High Strength Concrete With Short Polypropylene Fiber For Spalling Resistance
This paper presents the effect of polypropylene fibers on the spalling resistance of high strength concrete. The compressive strength and the elastic modulus of fiber concrete were basically the same as in concrete without fiber. Cylinder specimens (φ=100mm) were subjected to a fire test. It was observed that most of the concrete specimens without fiber showed deep spalling and rupture after the fire test. While fiber concrete specimens on the other hand showed partial or non-spalling behavior. In the fire tests of concrete column specimens, those with a water-cementitious binder ratio=0.25 and without fibers showed severe spalling of their concrete covers. However, for column specimens with short polypropylene fibers, very slight spalling was observed. Hence, from these test results, the significant contribution of polypropylene fiber to the spalling resistance of high strength concrete could be verified. The spalling properties could be estimated by fire tests with cylinder specimen under no loading, because similar results were obtained for fire tests of both column specimens and cylinder specimens.
